Every home in Mexico should maintain an accessible emergency kit. This kit should be designed to sustain your family for at least 7 days without access to normal services.
Water: Store 1 liter per person per day. For a family of 4, this means 28 liters per week. Commercial bottled water is easier to store than tap water. Include water purifiers or treatment tablets as backup.
Food: Select non-perishable foods your family will actually eat. Include emergency crackers, protein bars, dried fruits, canned tuna, ready-to-eat soups. Avoid very salty foods that increase thirst.
Medicines: Critical prescription medications (2+ weeks), aspirin, pain medicines, antacids, diarrhea medicines, antibiotic ointment, sterile saline for eyes.
Documents: Passports, birth certificates, insurance policies, property titles, important medical documents, family photos in waterproof container.
Tools: LED flashlight (doesn't need frequent replacement), extra batteries, battery or hand-crank radio, first aid kit, Swiss army knife, duct tape, rope.
Other: Cash (ATMs may not function), personal hygiene items, diapers if applicable, pet food, local maps, emergency contact list.
