Is Bali Safe from Tsunamis?

Comprehensive answer about tsunami risk in Bali and factors affecting safety.

Analysis of Bali's Tsunami Risk

Bali is relatively safe from tsunamis compared to other regions in Indonesia such as Aceh or West Sumatra. The island is located far enough from the Sumatran Megathrust Fault, the zone that generates large tsunamis. Earthquakes that occur in Bali itself rarely generate tsunamis because their mechanism tends to move horizontally (strike-slip) rather than vertically.

However, Bali is not completely free from tsunami risk. If a major earthquake occurs in the Sunda Strait region or in the subduction zone south of Java, Bali could experience significant tsunami waves, although smaller than those experienced by regions closer to the epicenter. Earthquakes in other areas such as the Banda Sea can also generate tsunami waves that reach Bali.

The recommendation for tourists and residents of Bali is to remain alert to tsunami warnings, especially if they feel a strong earthquake lasting more than 20 seconds. It is better to move to higher ground than wait for an official warning, because tsunami waves can arrive within 15-30 minutes of an earthquake.
