Indonesia's Disaster Preparedness Fundamentals

Indonesia's infrastructure, warning systems, and national preparedness strategies.

National Preparedness Framework

Indonesia has developed a comprehensive disaster preparedness framework through the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). This organization coordinates with local governments, communities, and international organizations to improve disaster response and risk mitigation.

Indonesia's tsunami early warning system, operated by the Earthquake and Tsunami Center, uses a network of seismic stations and ocean sensors to detect earthquakes and potential tsunamis. The system has been refined since 2004 and can now provide warnings within minutes of an earthquake being detected.

Despite significant progress, challenges remain. Many remote areas still have limited access to early warning information, and public awareness of evacuation protocols varies across regions. Indonesia continues to invest in disaster safety education in schools and communities to enhance public preparedness.
