Hurricane Preparation in Mexico

Preparedness guide for residents in hurricane risk zones.

For residents on Mexico's coasts during hurricane season (June-November), preparation is crucial. This guide provides essential steps.

First, establish clear communication before the season. Decide where each family member will go if evacuation is ordered. Identify evacuation routes from your area and official emergency shelters. Practice an evacuation route with your entire family.

Second, secure your home. Reinforce doors and windows. Secure or protect external objects that could become projectiles. Clear drains and ensure outside piping is clear to allow rainwater drainage.

Third, maintain a hurricane-specific kit: water, food, medications for 2+ weeks, flashlight with extra batteries, battery or hand-crank radio, first aid kit, important documents in waterproof container, cash.

Fourth, have a plan for pets. Emergency shelters do not always accept animals. Identify pet-friendly hotels or care centers in advance.

Finally, subscribe to alerts from the National Water Commission (CONAGUA) and National Meteorological Service. Understand the difference between advisories, alerts, and mandatory evacuations.
