Hurricane Evacuation Planning Guide

Step-by-step hurricane preparedness and evacuation process

Pre-Season Preparation

Hurricane preparedness begins months before the season. Review your evacuation zone through your county's emergency management office. Understand evacuation routes, timeline requirements, and shelter locations. Create household documentation including important papers, insurance records, and medical information in waterproof containers.

When Hurricane Threat Emerges

Monitor National Hurricane Center forecasts continuously. When a hurricane watch is issued (48 hours before anticipated landfall), prepare your property: secure loose outdoor items, fill bathtubs with water for non-drinking use, board windows, and prepare vehicles with full fuel tanks. Charges your electronic devices fully.

Evacuation Trigger Points

When a hurricane warning is issued (36 hours before anticipated landfall), follow official evacuation orders immediately. Do NOT wait—congested roads and weather deterioration make later evacuation dangerous. Shelters typically open 24 hours before anticipated landfall.

Evacuation Kits

Prepare kits including: important documents, medications, medical devices, cash, credit cards, pet carriers and food, infant supplies, comfort items for children, and medications. Keep kits accessible in your vehicle or near exits for rapid departure.

Post-Hurricane Returns

Return home only when authorities declare areas safe. Watch for downed power lines, flooded areas, and contaminated water. Document property damage with photographs for insurance claims.
