Earthquake Preparedness Guide

Practical guide to earthquake preparation and response in Indonesia.

Household Earthquake Preparation Steps

Earthquake preparedness begins at the household level with simple yet effective steps. First, identify safe locations in your home where you can take shelter from debris, such as under a sturdy table or beside a load-bearing wall. Regular practice of "drop, cover, hold on" with your family can save lives when an earthquake occurs.

Second, prepare an emergency kit containing drinking water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, and battery-powered radio. Ensure every family member knows the location of this emergency kit. Third, secure items that can fall such as cabinets, pictures, and lamps with clamps or straps to the wall to prevent damage and injury.

Fourth, create a clear family communication plan if an earthquake separates family members. Designate one person outside the region to serve as the family information center. Fifth, ensure everyone in the home knows how to shut off gas, electricity, and water. Gas leaks and explosions can follow large earthquakes, and the ability to shut off these sources can prevent secondary disasters.
